At the beginning of a new development cycle, Ubuntu developers from around the world gather to help shape and scope the next release of Ubuntu. The summit is open to the public, but it is not a conference, exhibition or other audience-oriented event. Rather, it is an opportunity for Ubuntu developers — who usually collaborate online — to work together in person on specific tasks.

Small groups of developers will participate in short Forum and Workshop (formerly called “BoF”/Birds-of-a-Feather) sessions. This allow a single project is discussed and documented in a written specification. These specifications will be used for planning the new release of Ubuntu.

Today’s schedule and links to participate in the discussion via VOIP or simply listen in via an icecast stream can be found at http://people.ubuntu.com/~scott/uds-intrepid/2008-05-19.

You can also find related blog posts, pictures, etc. on the Ubuntu Planet, Flicker, etc.

The EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) Ubuntu Membership Approval Board will be meeting on May 27th at 20:00 UTC to review and approve pending Ubuntu Member applicants.

What is Membership?

Membership of the Ubuntu community means recognition of a significant and sustained contribution to Ubuntu and the Ubuntu community. Contributions in all areas are welcome, from support to advocacy, from programming to artwork and documentation, from LoCoTeams activities to core packaging.

Membership entitles you to the following benefits:

  1. An @ubuntu.com e-mail alias that forwards to your real e-mail.
  2. An ubuntu/member/your_nick hostname IRC cloak on freenode
  3. The right to print business cards with the Ubuntu logo.
  4. Syndication on Planet Ubuntu of your Ubuntu blog or the Ubuntu category posts in your blog, if you have one.

Requirements

If you think your contributions have been significant and sustained, you can try to become a member. Generally, at least two months of visible, significant activity will be required.

The regular way to apply for membership is through the regional membership boards. Alternatively some Ubuntu teams can grant membership directly through their governance Council. Examples are the Kubuntu Council, the Edubuntu Council, and the MOTU Council.

In each case, you need to add your name to the agenda for the next meeting of the membership board for your region, or the team council, and prepare carefully according to the instructions below.

The regional membership boards hold meetings in the early evening in the relevant region. If this time is not convenient for you, you can attend a meeting of a membership board for one of the other regions.

Hello everyone,

I would like to announce the second mass Xubuntu community meeting which will be held on June 18th @ 8:00pm (2000) UTC. At this meeting, we will discuss the second draft of the Xubuntu strategy document which is an revised version based on community feedback. This meeting will allow interested parties (Xubuntu developers, Xubuntu community members, Xubuntu users, and anyone interested in seeing Xubuntu being successful) to discuss the document and ways that we can improve it. Suggestions and feedback gathered at this hour long meeting will be used to to produce the final draft.

On June 21st @ 5:00pm (1700) UTC a second meeting will take place. At this meeting, we will discuss the priorities and specifications for Intrepid for roughly half an hour to three quarters of an hour. Following, we will all hop on Gobby and work on improving the document collaboratively (particular the standards procedures section). By the end of this meeting, we will have a set of goals for Intrepid and the candidate Xubuntu strategy document.

On June 23rd, I will announce (if all goes well) the official ratification of the Xubuntu strategy document and the official goals for Intrepid. I believe this schedule provides ample opportunity for individual community members to express their ideas, concerns, frustrations, excitement, approval, etc. and will result in a document that is supported and legitimized by its community.

I encourage everyone with an interest in the Xubuntu project to come and participate. If you’re a MOTU-hopeful, MOTU, or core-dev who has been thinking about contributing to the Xubuntu project then now is an excellent time to do so. Xubuntu is what it is because of who we all are.

I look forward to seeing you all on the 18th and 21st of June later this month.

Thank you,

Cody Somerville

The next Bugs for Hugs day will be held in #ubuntu-bugs on the Freenode IRC network.

Information is on the Ubuntu June 24 Hug Day wiki page. Generally the focus is moving bugs from the New status to Incomplete or Confirmed, for this hug day we’ll work on helping move bugs from Fix Committed to Fix Released! We’ll do this by verifying that packages in the hardy-proposed repository fix the bugs they were designed to and that the package still functions that way it should.
