[other] Do Hardy upgrade twice? No usb

Forums Latest Posts - 1 hour 20 min ago
Hi all,

I've searched some in the forums, but I haven't spotted my problem there, which is that I chose to keep my old rather accept the new usb configuration during the upgrade. I misread the text and can now "repent at leisure". I have no way, for example, to use my usb mics or other usb peripherals.

I'm not sure afterward what the explanation during the upgrade said. Can I retrieve the text from the upgrade installation for more careful reading? I've located a pile of stuff in /var/log about the upgrade but if someone knows where it actually is, I'd be grateful for the pointer.

Is there a simple solution? Is a second upgrade possible, so I could just say update instead of keep?

Thanks,
Daniel

[ubuntu] Downgrade Perl 5.10 to 5.8.8

Forums Latest Posts - 1 hour 22 min ago
Hi,

I've somehow upgraded my default installation of Perl 5.8.8 to Perl 5.10. The only thing that I think could have done this was my installation of the perl module "Carp"

So what I'd like to do is downgrade Perl 5.10 back to 5.8.8.

Does anyone out there have any ideas?

[ubuntu] Various Small Problems

Forums Latest Posts - 1 hour 24 min ago
I have a few minor problems that don't worry me too bad, but if I can fix them... I'd like to.

First, when I unmount a flash drive... sometimes it gives me a notification that says I can safely remove it, and the light on my flash drive turn off... sometimes it doesn't notify me, and the light doesn't turn off. Weird eh? Either way... it looks like it is unmounted... it doesn't even show up in the filesystem.

The other problem... sometimes when I come out of suspend it turns on and the unlock screen pops up... but it freezes. I can't Ctrl+Alt+Backspace or anything. So, I usually just hold down the power button to turn it off and restart. That sort of defeats the purpose of suspend... but it doesn't happen that often... maybe 1 out of every 15 suspends.

Another thing... I have been asking people how to uninstall something that I installed from a script... but I have never received an answer... so if anyone knows how to do that... I'll send the script to you.

I've been using Ubuntu for about a year now... haven't used Windows on my home computer for about 9 months or so. Ubuntu now does everything that I need it to do, it's way more fun to tinker around with, and the Ubuntu community is way more helpful than I expected. So, I'm a pretty happy GNU/Linux user.

[ubuntu] Partitions I can delete

Forums Latest Posts - 1 hour 24 min ago
Hi all, I am a newbie to Ubuntu, and really want to switch over from Vista (which I have grown to dislike even more and more).

I have a Dell vostro 1400, and am trying to install ubuntu using the Wubi installer.

I want create a new partition, and then install ubuntu solely on that new drive.

When I loaded a Gparted live disk, I saw that I already had four primary partitions.

Can I delete them all except for the one on which Vista is installed?

I have all the backup disks from DELL.

[ubuntu] Game install

Forums Latest Posts - 1 hour 25 min ago
Right, I've done the move, No more shitty windows for me. I've got Ubuntu (7.10) set up quite nicely how i want it, But one thing I want to do and unsure how to find out/attempt on how to accomplish it. I only really used windows to run Football Manager 2008 (It's the only game i play on the pc now after getting a 360 a few years ago) And i was just wondering if it's possible to run it in Ubuntu ? I really hope it's possible as it's the only reason making me want to install windows again to be able to run it

[ubuntu] grub wont overwrite windows boot loader

Forums Latest Posts - 1 hour 25 min ago
I've just installed ubuntu 8.04 by overwriting my windows drive. So I no longer have windows at all.

The only problem is Grub somehow didn't overwrite the windows boot loader, when I turn on my computer I get the windows boot loader and immediately following that I get a message saying that Windows is corrupt and it couldn't boot.

The only way I can get into the ubuntu thats installed on the drive is by booting into the liveCD and telling it to boot from the first hard disk. In this case I get Grub and can boot successfully into ubuntu.

I've tried redoing the Grub install with grub-install and setup(from within grub's interface) and both failed.

Any suggestions?

thanks,

[ubuntu] gdesklets issues

Forums Latest Posts - 1 hour 33 min ago
Hi all

i'm having a bit of a problem with gdesklets. It starts fine, loads desklets fine, but the desklets don't work as they used to work in older versions of ubuntu.

Namely, each desklet that gets loaded shows up as an item in the taskbar called "gdesklets-daemon". This item can be minimized / maximized which changes the location of the desklet, and if the item is closed it removes the desklet. By default the "gdesklets-daemon" item is only visible one one workspace, so when you switch to a diff workspace the desklet is no longer visible. I know that part is an easy fix w/ the right click menu but these didn't work this way in past version of ubuntu.

I recall this happening before when I first started playing with gdesklets, but can't remember how I went about fixing the problem and can't seem to find a way to fix it this time.

I'm running ubuntu 8.04, gdesklets 0.36, and I don't have the "gdesklets data" installed as i've read on a few other forums that that can cause problems.

any help would be appreciated, as the program is currently running it's a bit of a waste of time

[ubuntu] All files marked executable

Forums Latest Posts - 8 hours 19 min ago
When I copy files from my NTFS partition to /home they are all marked as executable. Can someone tell me why that is?

It is problematic and annoying when opening .txt files etc.

Will this cause problems when copying files back to the NTFS partition? Will it mess with file permissions or kill my data.

[ubuntu] Before I Begin, I Have a Few Questions

Forums Latest Posts - 8 hours 19 min ago
I want to try Ubuntu. For now, I'll just be playing around with it and using Windows XP as my primary operating system, so the use of Ubuntu will be general. I'll use it for media (music, pictures), Internet, and depending on what it's like for Ubuntu, maybe some gaming. I have three questions before I dig in and try it on my own and start reading the overwhelming guides.

By the way, I'm new to Ubuntu, but I'm pretty knowledgeable with computers and hardware in general.

1. Does 64-bit offer anything over 32-bit? I hear the advantage of the former is still negligible in most things, especially for my use, and that the latter has better stability. Is that still true? I have 4GB of RAM and my Windows XP installation only sees 3.25GB, so I know you need a 64-bit CPU and operating system to get more.

2. After downloading, how do I burn it? With what software and what settings? I remember trying to burn it before twice and neither disc would boot (but would work fine with autoplay, not that that can do much). Maybe it was just that computer or something, but maybe I didn't make it correctly? I don't burn too often so I wouldn't doubt it.

3. Would I run into anything specific with any of this hardware in the way of drivers?

ASUS Maximus Formula motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 CPU
4GB of RAM
nVidia GeForce 8800GT video card (I hear ATi is lacking with Linux drivers?)
SupremeFX II (SoundMAX HD) sound
2Wire (not sure of exact make/model) USB wireless adpater

Thanks in advance, and looking forward to Ubuntu!

Is X working in Intrepid?

Hi,

Quick question: is X working on Intrepid right now? I have a spare partition for it (with its own /home) so I don't really mind it being enormously broken.

I'm just bored with a stable release, I think. I need some breakage.

[all variants] AMD64 version - Pros and Cons

Forums Latest Posts - 8 hours 21 min ago
Hi,

I own a HP Pavillion laptop with an AMD Turion64x2 processor. I'm currently running Ubuntu 8.04 on it without any problems so far (_knocks on wood_). The version of Ubuntu is the i386 edition rather than the AMD64 edition as I was not sure if other software is easily available for the 64-bit edition of Linux. I previously used Windows XP/Vista extensively and am aware of the dearth of software available for the 64bit versions of Windows.

So basically my questions are:
  • Are 64-bit versions of Linux software easily available?
  • If a 64-bit version of a software is not available, can a 32-bit version run on Ubuntu without modifications?
  • Are there any driver support issues with Ubuntu AMD64?
  • What kind of performance (or other) benefits can I expect if I reinstall Ubuntu AMD64?
  • Are there any other potential issues with Ubuntu AMD64 that I should be aware of?

Thanks,
V. Thomas

[kubuntu] K3b kills dvd drive

Forums Latest Posts - 8 hours 22 min ago
Recently upgraded to Kubuntu Hardy. Now K3B kills my CD/DVD drive so bad that I need to power cycle the machine to get it working again. Soft-reset/reboot doesn't work.

This worked fine under Feisty.

I think this is the same bug as reported here:
http://sidux.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t-9201.html

System details are:
Kubuntu 8.04 x86_64

~$ k3b -v
Qt: 3.3.8b
KDE: 3.5.9
K3b: 1.0.4 Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
