I am posting this because I had a look in the threads and didn't find much.

Since I installed Ubuntu Linux in dual boot, it has been doing a very peculiar thing: randomly the desktop freezes, blocking every operation (and stopping music from, say, amarok) for something like 30-45 seconds. After this, the HD led lights up for a moment and the system starts working again.

I've seen this happening with 7.10 and now with 8.04... so I'm starting to think it could be my pc.

I have at the moment put ubuntu in a 10 GB partition, with a 2gb swap file partition.

I am working on an Asus Portable with a core duo 72300E, and 1 GB of RAM.

I really like working in Ubuntu (when I'm browsing happily) but these moments of downtime really make it quite unusable on the long run.

Anyone has a solution?

another problem(I think..) is that when I press "right click" on something it takes a long time till the menu is loaded(also when click on Applications or Places etc..) but I think is a compiz problem, I will try to get over compiz setting.

Using two NICs on one computer is it possible to establish two separate SFTP connections (going through two separate ISPs) to a server with the end result of speeding up the time it takes to upload?

I've been looking at network bonding or using Shorewall. But have no idea if i'm on the right track!

I am going to buy 1 gb 800MHz ddr2 ram. I have a intel 915gv mobo of 533 MHz FSB. In what speed will the 800MHz ram will run? Will it run at 800 MHz or 533 Mhz?

As Mark's preferred look for the next round of Ubuntus is "Orange on black", I would like to see this idea to be used for the Gnome panels as well.

There are only few themes that use dark panel bars but I like those quite a lot.

I put together something that covers my idea. What do you think. It has that certain TV widescreen bars feel, doesn't it?

Hi, i'm relatively new in linux... i'm running ubuntu 8.04 and installed global menu from a deb pack downloaded from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/global_menu http://gnome2-globalmenu.googlecode....-svn679.tar.gz

I installed, added the applet to my panel, restarted a few times and theres nothing so i right clicked on the applet and selected show active application title and show active window icon...so now i can see both the icon and the title but still not the menu as in mac...
any help please.

i suppose it should be because i installed from a deb built for gutsy. if so where can i find a deb for hardy, and/or where do i download the binaries and how do i compile it?

I do not need speach as i have vision but the magniffier's quality is REALLY bad. I am not saying copy Zoomtext but make it to where the mouse moves around the screen. When I used orca I had this huge mouse int he center of my screen with a smaller mouse (that being my real mouse) moving around.

I do not program but this is what i think about Orca.

Do you think ubuntu will ever come around and fix this? I was just unable to use it due to how strange it was tohave two curcers on the screen at once.

Im an "old" M$ user and used DVD Lab Pro alot for DVD Rebuilding (Adding subs)

Therefore i just want to ask if anybody knows any alternative for Ubuntu ?

In my 7.10, everything including sound worked perfect. Yesterday, I upgraded to 8.04, everything - except sound is OK.
The sound is there, it is just terrible - like when volume is truned to high up (oversteering?). Adjusting volume does nothing, it is there irrespective of level. The system autoselects sound, selecting oss or alsa manually makes no difference.

I use IBM Thinkpad T43, with ubuntu 8.04 installed. I have a ATI graphics card and also embeded audio card. and i also got compiz-fusion on my system, everthing was just fine.

about 3 hours ago i got a notification of apt showing that there are available upgrades. and i sudo apt-get upgrade it. Then it required reboot. Then nightmire happened:

apt automatically upgraded my kernel from 2.6.24-16 to 2.6.24-17-386. Then i found

1) i lost my audio card driver, now there's no audio output at all.
2) my ati driver doesn't work at all, whenever i open compiz-fusion, everthing is blank on my screen, i can not see anything but white world. There's nothing i can do even i change my boot kernel as 2.6.24-16. I chose to dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and then it's ok with metacity or compiz-fusion, but the speed is intolerable.

Seems it's becaues my automatic-upgrade to kernel 2.6.24-17. HOW can i fix the problems? I'm a totaly newbie and dont know what to do ...


Besides, after upgrade is done, i could no longer turn back to text mode by alt+ctrl+f1 or f2 or f3 ... What's wrong ?

I've installed today AfterImage to try it on my system.
After I've logged off, I can't login normally anymore, I'm getting this error:

.xsession-error log shows:

I've tried looking for this line in Xsession file, but did not find something related to it.

Tried to remove AfterImage and see it it's working - nothing helpful.

Is there some sort of program for Ubuntu that helps its user manage their small bussiness?

In the previous versions of Pidgin it was easy to lift the window up, like in msn messenger. Dunno why this new version doesn't allow the user to do that. A bug, perhaps?

I managed to fdisk one of my hard drives that contained most of my data.
Have tried testdisk,diskinternals linux recovery,r-studio,Nucleus kernel linux.No luck.the filesystem on the disk was ext3.Any help,ideas would be appreciated

I've been looking at this for the past couple of weeks now and I'm having some real trouble trying to find any info.

I had an LDAP server running with SSL/TLS using OpenSSL under 7.10, but after doing a fresh install of 8.04, SSL/TLS just refused to work at all.

I found some information on the web that suggests that OpenLDAP in now linked against gnuTLS and looking at the dependencies for ldap-utils shows that it requires libgnutls13 instead of libssl. Also, all the options for TLS setup have disappeared from the configs, so the Ubuntu devs obviously know about it too.

That being the case, has anybody any documentation for how to set up an LDAP server using SSL/TLS using gnuTLS, including settting up the sertificates and (more importantly really) the ldap.conf config for the server and client?

Hello. I need some help in upgrading my Kubuntu 6.06 LTS to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS.

What I currently have (Checking using Windows Disk Management)

1. 30GB NTFS (Windows XP)
2. 10GB FAT32 (Shared)
3. 35GB Unknown (Kubuntu 6.06)
4. 2 GB Unknown (Guessing its the swap partition, I'm not sure)

What I would like to have

1. 30GB NTFS (Windows XP)
2. 30GB FAT32 (Shared)
3. 15GB Ubuntu 8.04
4. 2 GB Swap

What should be done
I have read the Upgrading to Ubuntu 8.04 documentation but I don't want to upgrade through software because I already have the installation CD.

Furthermore, it says that there is an option to upgrade even on the CD, but I don't know whether this works to upgrade from Kubuntu to Ubuntu.

Also, as you can see from the list above, I want to downsize the Linux partition and transfer 20GB of space to the shared FAT32 drive (so that I store my media there for both OSes to read without requiring any additional software). Is it possible to bring about this merge while the FAT32 partition contains data (current state) ? Or will I have to make a separate FAT32 partition without touching the original one?

One more thing: I read that I would need to use fixmbr if I uninstalled Kubuntu and wanted to use only Windows, but in my case I will be uninstalling Kubuntu 6.06 and installing Ubuntu 8.04 while the LiveCD is in, so am I right in assuming that I won't need fixmbr?

hi. I wasn't to sure if this had been covered in a previous thread or not (I did check). But I was wondering if someone had had experience with running 32 bit Ubuntu on an AMD64 processor? Were there a lot of problems? What kind? should I use a 64 bit ver. of Ubuntu? Will it make a difference? Would I be better off with 32 bit or 64 bit in light of my new processor? Etc., etc, etc. Thanks for any info that will prepare me.

i have bought an ssl certificate from godaddy.com I have set the ssl options for my domain on webmin to load the key and the crt, but when i go to the browser and i typed with "https" i get an error
error code: -12263

this is firefox and in ie the page wouldnt load.
